Sending Starting Materials for BAC Library Construction

Immediately after collection, snap freeze materials and store them in a -80c freezer until shipment.

Once the materials are ready for shipment, prepare them in the following fashion:

  • For animal tissue:
    • Place the plastic 50ml screw-cap centrifuge tube inside of a bag. Place the bag in a small cardboard box and secure the box. Add padding material as needed.
  • For plant tissue:
    • Place the material frozen in aluminum foil into bag(s) and place the bags inside a cardboard box. Add padding material as needed.
    • Be aware plastic bags will become brittle and may crack when exposed to extreme cold. Please wrap plant tissue in Aluminum foil to ensure safe delivery.

Once the material is ready, the shipping box can be prepared.

Because this material will be shipped on dry ice, it needs to be sent inside an insulated styrofoam carton. A good box to use is an old enzyme shipping box, preferably one that still has the cardboard outer box.


Place the small box of materials inside the carton and position the dry ice.


Recommendation:

  • 20 pounds (9KG) of dry ice is needed to ship within the United States. Approximately 50 pounds (22.7KG) of dry ice is needed for shipments from outside the United States.
Once the ice is packed, place the lid on the box and seal it with tape to prevent the ice from subliming too quickly.


Seal the cardboard outer box and affix the necessary labels to the outside of the box. Indicate proper package orientation on the outside of the box.



Labels that are needed:

For clients outside the United States, Please know that DHL and UPS are not well equipped to send dry ice to Pullman, Washington. It is recommended that Federal Express be used for materials shipments to this location.
